Elgato Video Capture For Mac Review

If you look closely at the captured video from the Elgato product, you will notice some minor squares of slightly distorted color at times, where the video has been over-compressed. Also, as noted above, the Elgato Video Capture automatically does a minor zoom on all captured video to avoid the fuzzy lines at the bottom of the captured video. On the plus side, this saves you the step of doing that zoom yourself in video editing. On the minus side, it is cropping all 4 sides of the video slightly, which might not be what you want.: This product exists in two very similar versions, the and the, but the functionality of the two models is identical when capturing video from analog video magnetic tape. Although designed for high-def video capture, it's by far the best product I tried for standard-def video capture as well. This product gets excellent reviews on Amazon, and rightfully so.

There is no easier way to digitise home video to playback on your computer, to sync with an iPad or iPhone, to edit in iMovie or Windows Live Movie Maker, or to upload to YouTube. Elgato Video Capture comes with Elgato Video Capture software for Mac and Windows. Put Family Memories on your computer The era of VHS tapes is winding down, and after three decades there is a lot of video content to transfer for modern playback devices. What's more, any video stored on magnetic tape (such as VHS, Video8 and Hi8) has a limited life span and deteriorates over time. Elgato Video Capture provides an easy way to bring those precious memories into iTunes or your Windows Media Player library.

Elgato's Video Capture does just that. It's a little hardware dongle with connections for Composite and S-Video as well as audio, and it even comes with AV cables and a SCART adaptor. Elgato Video Capture, Capture analog video for your Mac or PC, iPad and iPhone, white GEEZER REVIEW: Typical geezers, we had tons of VHS tapes, family videos we took in the 80s & 90s. Retired now and downsizing into a tiny home, we needed to digitize these priceless memories. The Elgato Systems USB Analog Video Capture Device is a compact USB device, perfect for converting analog video to a digital format. You'll be able to use the device to capture old home movies, VHS recordings, or any other analog media to a modern digital format.

Inside we find the Elgato Video Capture device, Elgato Video Capture CD-ROMs, composite to SCART adaptor, Composite Video/RCA stereo cable and proof of purchase key. Unfortunately I received an earlier revision of the CD-ROM so the review copy did not contain the Cyberlink program to test the Elgato Video Capture using a Windows machine. The device is all white similar to most other Elgato Apple designed products. It is composed of a plastic white rectangular video capture box.

OR, if your video source provides it, you can connect through a SCART adapter (the dongle's yellow, red, and white connect to the SCART adapter, then the adapter connects to your video source's SCART port). The instructions provide simples sketches of all of these connections, you just pick the one that matches your device. The instructions say that the box contains a CD-ROM with the software, but this was missing. Instead, a web site was provided from which the software is downloaded.

The Sky recording looks as good as the TV but the recording from the console looks a little darker than the reality. I am sure the brightness could be tweaked a little but I think the quality is as good as game footage I have seen featured in TV programmes etc. One slight negative was I found I had to play the game through the laptop screen as my TV didn’t offer any form or video out from an HDMI device. Again this is a very small negative and I sure there is a better way to connect the device to the Xbox to overcome these issues. I love this device as it serves a genuine need I face on a regular basis. TV recorded on Sky+ and old videos on VHS are now easily transfered to a digital format using the Elgato device.

The software that installs after it is downloaded is very simple to use. It walks you through naming your file, configuring the video input and audio input, and then provides a big red button to begin the capture.

If I am absolutely sure of what I want, I will order online. However, for many purchases, I will do a lot of online research, narrow my choices to two or three, and then call in to speak with a salesperson at B&H. Good experiences keep me coming back. Rated 4 out of 5 by Anonymous from Simple, easy to use Bought this to convert a bunch of old family videos on VHS over to digital. Have not been disappointed. It's very easy to install & use, plus, I've encountered none of the audio synching problems I've read about with other (cheaper) brands.

I looked online and it looks like service charge about $20 per tape to convert. I already am ahead of the game in just 5 tapes. You certainly do not have to, I do not get anything from it, but I get a good feeling that I helped someone. It was time: I had some important VHS tapes that are more than twenty years old that were deteriorating because of age. Elgato Video Capture is the device to use. It costs less than $100 and I ordered it from Walmart. It arrived in California from Arkansas within a week, a business day earlier than promised. In my garage I found an old stereo Video Cassette Recorder (old school VCR), made sure the four heads inside were shiny clean, and powered it on. No sparks, so I connected the Elgato Video Capture Device to red, white, and yellow output jacks of the VCR. A s-Video plug is also included, but that is for DVDs.

Kinda weird and have had to re-do a few recording because of that. Still though, a good system.

Luckily, I didn't really need it, but it might've been a nice option instead of the included composite cable (in my experience it wouldn't make a difference with the work I was doing). The software was pretty straightforward. But editing wasn't very precise, I really had to fiddle with it to edit the video the way I wanted it. And it would've been nice to have a 'back' button to click onto to make some last-minute changes before it's completed. Most importantly though, the final product turned out very well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Linwood from Great product! Software and product work well.

Along the way, I have gotten some familiarity with the various technologies available today for transferring magnetic tapes into digital form. I found out some interesting things, and thought I would share them, in the hope that it might help others. First, and you probably already know this, if you have any video memories on magnetic video tape, you want to get them transferred into digital form onto your PC or DVD or Blu-ray as soon as possible, before the video badly deteriorates. This especially includes regular VHS tapes, Video8 tapes, and normal Hi8 tapes, all of which are analog formats and are particularly susceptible to deterioration starting after about 10 years. Somewhat less susceptible to deterioration are Digital8 (which is also recorded on Hi8 tapes) and MiniDV tapes, because those are digital formats. But even for digital tapes, it is still magnetic tape which deteriorates over time, and you need to get those videos off of there. Seriously, at the risk of sounding like a doomsayer, if you have precious memories on magnetic video tape, you need to transfer that video off of those tapes and into digital form as soon as possible, or risk losing them forever.

For my main test a two hour VHS video converted to MP4 using H.264 and AAC codecs at a resolution of 640 x 480 took up 1.45 GB. For this resolution that file size is rather large but the quality was accurately reproduced from the source material. In addition I tested the Elgato Video Capture device using a GameCube console and DVD player and was easily able to capture video from both components. One thing that was apparent using the Elgato Video Capture is that it’s system intensive as my MacBook Pro had its normally silent fans to kick in at full throttle. Video can be output to either H.264 or MPEG-4 formats. H.264 encodes at 1.4 MBit/sec while MPEG-4 encodes at 2.4 MBit/sec.

It appears that the software initially saves the captured image as MPEG-2 format. At the end of recording, it 'processes' the video and saves as MP4 format and deletes the MPEG-2 version. Every other tape capture, the software processing fails. I have to QUIT the program after each capture process, and restart it for a new tape, otherwise the processing to MP4 format fails. HOWEVER, I finally figured out that when the MP4 format conversion fails, the MPEG-2 version is still there in a temporary directory. You can find it, rename and move to where ever you want to save it.

But I can tell you that it really sucks for a PC user (or at least it did for me). To be fair, Elgato really tried to help me out and their customer service was great. However, with the knowledge of having a functional workaround, I just gave up on it. Finally a vid capture device that works! Tried two other makes that gave horrible image quality, before trying the Elgato.

They're thrilled with such a priceless gift that they can now anytime, anywhere. Elgato Video Capture wasn't the cheapest product we found for this, but also wasn't the most expensive. We've learned from mistakes in the past: for electronic devices it's always best to not go with cheap stuff, to ensure great quality and ease of use. The Todd And Debra Show Gives Elgato Video Capture: 4 out of 4 Geezer Thumbs Up!!!! My apologies for this long review.

Highly recommend cleaning the VCR heads first however. That made a very big difference in the quality of the recording. Very simple if you follow the youtube advice. One feature missing (small quibble but i noticed other reviews complaining about it) is the lack of a pause button while recording. You either continue your recording over the 30 second mistaken shot of your foot or you stop the recording, stop the vcr, save the recording and then start from the new spot. The latter process is tedious and since i plan to edit and rearrange the video anyway in I movie the lack of the pause isn't really an issue. The nice feature about this is you can stick in a tape at night, hit record, go to bed and in the morning your two hour VHS tape is on the computer.

(There are many inexpensive or perhaps even free software packages that will do this conversion.) The problem with editing H.264 compressed video files directly is that the extreme compression, which crosses video frame boundaries, can cause problems for video editing software, resulting sometimes in digital artifacts or out-of-sync audio in the final edited video output. An uncompressed or MJPEG-compressed AVI or MOV video source file avoids these problems. A word about using an outside company to make a high-quality transfer of your analog video tape: A search of the Internet reveals many companies that will transfer your video tape into digital form, and send the digital files back to you on a fairly inexpensive USB hard drive that you can supply yourself or that they will sell you.

Here's a link to the actual file for comparing choppiness: You will need to ACTUALLY DOWNLOAD THE FILE! Do this by clicking on the downward arrow on the upper left corner of the screen--the video preview that pops up is through YouTube, so you guessed it, it's de-interlaced. If you have a Mac, then this product might be great for you.

Other Thoughts: Very satisfied with the results so far. I have been using it to backup some VHS tapes and its been great. Pros: Does what the product description says- captures video. Cons: Low Quality video capture (about 2.5 mb/s) Other Thoughts: I would not recommend buying this. The capture bitrate is very low (around 2.5 mb/s) which will compress your image even further from its original analog quality.

Some of these companies are better than others. A few of these companies are very high-end, using expensive video transfer equipment.

The box that the tool came in contains the hardware and instruction printed on the box, but no software. The instructions explain how to connect the device to the VCR or other video source. Then the device is connected to the PC via a USB port. After the PC recognizes the device the instructions say to download and install the video capture software from their website.

Well, that didn't quite work out. I had so many issues with that unit, videos were captured in AVI format only (which my MacBook didn't like) and even when I'd try to convert them it turns out the video files were corrupt in a weird way. They'd play but if you tried to edit them my windows desktop would freeze.

Probably a good idea to disconnect and let it cool between tapes if you're doing a lot of copying. Software; I'd have given this product a higher rating if the software (a) installed and functioned flawlessly (it didn't/doesn't), and (b) it had a few more features. First attempt at installation failed. Fortunately all installed correctly on the second attempt.

No such troubles with the Elgato.everything worked perfectly. For someone with not a lot of technical/computer skills, the Elgato Video Capture is a fantastic device!

However, there are two trade-offs to obtain this quality. The first is that your uncompressed video takes a LOT of disk space. The second, and more important, consideration is that you need a computer that can handle the extremely high data rate coming from the Blackmagic device (since the video is uncompressed). If you run Windows, you need a high-speed computer using an Intel x58 based motherboard, a true USB 3.0 port, and the latest USB 3.0 drivers. Most computers don't meet this requirement, even when they have a USB 3.0 port. There is a list of officially tested motherboards on the Blackmagic web site. My 1st-generation Dell XPS 17 laptop (which has two USB 3.0 ports) does not meet this requirement, so I can't use the Intensity Shuttle, and thus I haven't tried it.

I could start the video, start the capture and then come back to the PC later. The VCR would be stopped, the tape rewound, and the capture software waiting patiently for me to finish up. The last step in the capture process is to set trim points at the start and finish of the file.

The software monitors the signal it is receiving through the USB port and will automatically stop recording when the signal stops (if the tape runs out), so it doesn't tape hours of dead air. - The software gives you the option of trimming the beginning and end of the recording. Note, that the software does not provide the ability to break the recording into multiple files. Nor does the software give you the option of loading a previous recording, trim it, then resaving it. You get one shot at trimming, then the recording is stored to disk. On the whole, I'm happy with this product, it does the basic functions needed to transfer old video tapes to your computer, but it does not provide movie preparation functions, for this ability, look into a program like Movavi Video Editor.

By Dan Brown – Guest Writer Found at Amazon at Like many people we collected several movies over the years on VHS tape. Many of these are Disney moves or other kid movies. Our kids are now adults and have moved out of our house, but we do anticipate that they will soon marry and we will have grandchildren around that might want to watch those movies. Ideally we would simply keep the tapes around and play them on the VCR when the grandkids are around. However, our VCR no longer works, and it is no longer possible to buy a new one. They are available at garage sales or thrift stores for as little as $5, but I don’t trust electronic gear from a thrift store to last.

I would recommend another option like going to through a DV port from an old camcorder or DV deck or finding something else that will not give you such quality loss. For quick and easy capture, go with the Elgato, but if you're a professional or expect high quality results I would stray away. Pros: Simple hardware/software to use.

I did have one issue with the software. However, I don’t know if many other people will have the same issue. My wife and I share this computer and I have us set up so that each of us have a local account and we switch between users as needed when we change users.

There was no noticeable loss in quality. In short I am very happy with the product and highly recommend it. Of course your experience may vary depending upon your hardware. Hardware: Apple iMac (Late 2013) running OS X 10.11.6 El Capitan, Sony DCR TRV11 NTSC Handicam (2000), Magnavox VRT442 (1996). I purchased this to convert my 30 VHS tapes I have from over 30 years ago.

It is a USB based device that allows the capture of analog signals via the included cable connections. This device allows the transfer and conversion of most any analog source into a digital format. Video is captured in real time thus eliminating the need to re-encoding. The Elgato Video Capture uses the connected computer’s hardware for encoding, so a powerful machine is definitely preferable. Recently Elgato added Cyberlink PowerDirector 8 Capture Edition Software for Windows users to take advantage of the device. This program works with the Elgato device and offers many features found in the Elgato Video Capture Software. The Elgato Video Capture comes in the familiar looking white cardboard Elgato branded box.
