But if you’re someone who catches a nap while playing music the upside is your vinyl won’t get damaged. You also have the option to turn this function off which means the motor will keep turning. The upside to this is that the final track won’t be cut short which sometimes happens with 78’s. If you’re looking for flexibility with the software, there really isn’t any. The software will send the files only to iTunes and in the format specified by your iTunes set up.
The software records each track in real time, listening for the silence in between and starting a new track where appropriate. I was impressed with this auto-split feature, though it has its limitations as it requires silence long enough between tracks for the software to determine where to start a new track. If you know the tracks move seamlessly between songs, you’ll want to use the manual split feature so you can decide when to start a new track, but you’ll have to remain an active listener!

For about 12 dollars more, the Max would be preferable to me for these features. The concern I have is if the Max has as good sound quality as the Archive. (After all, the Archive has gotten the rave reviews). They both use the same stylus, but are there other things that would affect the sound? Hi Ken, Thanks for reaching out with your question. There’s not much in difference between the 2 where sound output is concerned. They have the same sized speakers, the same plinth and a solid base on which the plinth is mounted.

I don't know a lot about the LPs until I play then with the turntable and software. I like the option to have the software separate sound absence or to do it manually. The de vice is simple to use. The device is so simple to use I have no dislikes about it.
It appears to be sturdily built. On the other hand the software could be much stronger. It has no controls except on or off and record or pause in addition to naming the Artist, Album, and song title. Rated 2 out of 5 by Wes from You get what you pay for I've had mixed results with album playback.

This record player is an entry level unit. So, if you’re looking for any kind of fidelity sound the Ion Audio Max is not the record player for you. But, if you’re a casual listener who breaks out the old vinyl collection once in a blue moon, an all-in-one solution like the Ion Audio Max might just be what you need. I like the wood finish with its smooth, rounded corners and the dust cover only partially covers the plinth, leaving the built-in speakers exposed. It reminds me of an attractive record player you’d find in a home in the early 70’s.
What this player cannot do and will never do is gloss over all those pops and skips as the needle works through the grooves. Will that be as enjoyable on your headphones while you work out at the gym? From my perspective, it depends on the music.

The main issue with ceramic cartridges is that they are prone to skipping. To negate this drawback they are set in the factory with a heavier tracking force.
The dust cover also comes disconnected in the box but easily snaps right on to the hinges. After that, you just hit the power button on the back, put on your favorite disk, plug in headphones (or connect to your stereo), drop the needle, and sit back and listen. The design of this unit, however, is not simply for listening to your records—as the title “Conversion Turntable” suggests. After getting it set up, I pulled out the provided installation disk and USB cable to check out the digital conversion process.

(January 8, 2013) – ION, a leader in consumer audio and entertainment technology, announces iLP, a digital conversion turntable for iPad, iPhone, and iPod, which includes a free app for converting vinyl records into digital music. ION will exhibit iLP in four colors, red, white, blue, and natural, at Central Hall Booth 11604 at the 2013 CES show in Las Vegas from January 8-11. The USB conversion turntable, a concept pioneered and expanded upon by ION, has given vinyl enthusiasts all over the world an easy way to update and enjoy their vinyl library.
Your audio from that device will play on the speakers on the turntable or through the output jacks, and, of course, it goes to the computer for recording. The software, during the first step, lets you determine which audio device you are using and also lets you specify the type of tape (normal or chrome) you are playing. Conclusion All this simplicity is ultimately an advantage as it helps determine who might get the most out of this turntable. There aren’t any bells and whistles on the turntable itself, and the software also reflects this “keep it simple and get the job done” approach.
This item doesn't have an adjustable tonearm weight and I've had trouble with some brand new vinyl skipping. For some reason this hasn't been a problem with any older albums I have tried. I've seen similar issues documented on the manufacturer's customer support forums and I've contacted them requesting help, service or replacement but I have not yet received a reply. It anything, this item has convinced me that I enjoy the experience and sound of vinyl enough that I will invest in a better turntable soon.
It appears to be sturdily built. On the other hand the software could be much stronger.

What is the slip mat that comes with the record player made of? The slip mat is made of felt. Does this record player have a built-in preamp? Can I use an external preamp with this record player?
But it’s still modern looking. If you’re a serious novice ready to throw yourself into vinyl collecting and you want a better unit, something like the is a better choice. Although you’d still need to cough up for speakers. Like any record player in this class, the Ion Audio Max does have a few drawbacks. I’ll be getting into these in more detail as we go through the features one by one. It’s worth noting here that according to customer reviews, Ion has exceptional customer service. I would recommend purchasing any product including this record player from Amazon and not through a third party selling on Amazon.
Conclusion All this simplicity is ultimately an advantage as it helps determine who might get the most out of this turntable. There aren’t any bells and whistles on the turntable itself, and the software also reflects this “keep it simple and get the job done” approach. So permit me to digress as I think about the benefits and uses of this player. My uncle never left the grooves in the record. Growing up, I can remember the wall-o records in his living room, with the massive speakers perched high on shelves on each side of the wall. If I go to his house today, thirty years later, it looks almost exactly the same–except now there’s a little desktop computer set over in the corner next to the component stereo system and turntable. He’s not a man completely stuck in his 20’s, but he still enjoys the sound and experience of his vast record collection.
• Check the box titled Listen, then click the Apply button. • Click the Apply button, then click the OK button. Now, sound from vinyl playing back on your turntable will play through your PC's speakers (or another other selected audio output device if you have one). • You can control playback volume by clicking on the speaker icon in the lower-right corner of your screen. Macintosh • Connect your ION USB turntable to a USB port on your computer, and power it on.
The first step asks you which audio source your using. The second step provides you with your first look at whether you have everything set up correctly. On this screen, a digital meter tells you whether the computer is hearing your record. You can start playing the record and adjust the gain/input level to make sure your tracks sound good.
Of course, these are not going to provide you with an elegant and nuanced listening experience, but they work well as a small monitoring system if you’re using the player with a computer and don’t have any external speakers. Volume is controlled by a small rotary knob on the front of the unit. The ION Max LP also has an 1/8-inch headphone jack located right on the front (also controlled by the volume knob) and stereo RCA outputs on the back for connecting the player to a more robust audio system. The unit plays 78s, 45s (it comes with an adaptor for these) and 33s. It has an “autostop” switch that automatically turns the platter on when you lift the tonearm over the record and turns it off when the tonearm reaches the end of the disk.
The dimensions are 15.2″(w) x 16.4″(d) x 4″(h) and it weighs in at 7.7lbs. However, the plinth is designed with a natural wood base, this is a saving feature and bumps up the quality of the unit – wood is so much better than plastic.
The easy install, step-by-step sequence of the recording process and even the no-frills send-it-to-iTunes approach keeps the process at the lowest common denominator for someone with little interest and know-how in the world of 21st century technology. It allows them to easily record their favorite records while sitting back and enjoying them all at the same time. It sends those files in an organized manner, using iTunes’ basic structure of Artist and Album to make the files easy to find and enjoy in the new digital environment. For these reasons (and the meager $99 price point), I think it would make a great gift for that friend or relative who just cannot part with their beloved albums. Or, if you are a casual and curious listener yourself but don’t want to have to buy the MP3’s in order to enjoy music on your tablet which you already own, this player will be a great start into the new-old world of vinyl recordings.

The upside of a belt drive is that the belt acts as a shock absorber, reducing the vibration that resonates from the motor to the tonearm and stylus. As is standard with most all-in-one record players the Ion Audio Max does not have any options to control the finer aspects of the sound output. So no pitch control.
For PC users, there is a note regarding file size in the manual as the files are sent as WAVs. This is better for quality but not for storage. Because of this, PC users might want to convert their files for use on other devices or to reduce how much storage your new digital tracks take up on your hard drive. Of course, once in iTunes, you can manipulate and move your files to other programs, depending on what you like to use, but this requires additional steps and know-how beyond the recording process with the Max LP.
Product Name Ion Audio Max LP 3-Speed Belt Drive Record Player Brand Ion Speed Plays at 33, 45 and 78 RPM Drive Belt Drive Mode Manual with Auto Stop Built-in Preamp Yes Built-in Speakers Yes USB Yes Warranty 90 Days The Ion Audio Max LP 3-Speed Belt Drive Record Player doesn’t have any in-depth reviews online. So I decided to review this record player since it does have a few good features. It received good ratings overall and it’s reasonably priced for folks looking to spend less than 100 bucks. It’s a unit that’s easy to use, and it does convert vinyl to MP3 and there’s the added benefit of playing an MP3 device through the record player itself.
