Having issues when installed the free update running on my Family Tree Maker 2014. It installed and converted my file but I lost over 2000 names and the Family Tree Maker now does not have the christening or burial sections to complete. I too have this problem with FTM and: “Family Tree Maker was not able to receive information about your online tree from Ancestry.” And I’m not amused by the fact that others have the same problem and gives up. Maker 3.1 (version 22.2.6.950) in comparison with the final version of Family Tree Maker 3 (version 22.2.5.820) released by Ancestry. Along with critical bug fixes, and catching up the Mac edition with some.

Decided to upgrade. I was able to get the free upgrade to FTM 2014.1. After I registered this, I went through upgrade process again and it then showed I had 2014.1 but since I did not originally purchase 2014.1 MacKiev version, I had to pay discounted upgrade to FTM 2017. I did not attempt to contact MacKiev and request other options.

Ancestry.com’s announcement today that the company is selling the Family Tree Maker software business to Software MacKiev has created a few questions. For instance, who is Software MacKiev?

The people who use Reunion will usually say that Reunion is the best genealogy program. The people who use Family Historian will usually say that Family Historian is the best genealogy program. I am not aware of any consensus amongst the majority of genealogists as to which program qualifies for the title of “the best.” There certainly are several very good ones to choose from, however.

What are waste of time this, when it’s not my fault. My Sub is up for renewal in 90 days, at this point don’t know if it’s worth staying with or not. Especially, if this is going to keep happening. I’ve never had a problem from any other company that took this long to fix. It totally makes no sense.

I figured now, almost 8 years later, they’d finally have their act together. I have tried multiple syncs (again on only 2 small trees, thank goodness) and still NO Media transfer whatsoever!

A month delay now will save them and all users a lot of grief. Many of the issues seem due to Ancestry which does not have a great history of good software engineering (ie no way to turn off forum alerts due to a long missing button). Pricing for the new version is also fair. People who bought in the last year get it free and others who have never paid anything to MacKiev got a $30 pre-release or $40 upgrade price. MacKiev should have a trial version for new users or forget their $70 list price. I am very disgusted with McKiev right now, I paid for two download version of Family Tree maker and one disc copy.

Ben has a few tutorials on this website. Ancestry in Australia also told me to deal direct with Nova. This is how I eventually got my refund but it took months. I saved every email and every reply plus a copy of on line chats I sent everything to their resolution department and finally got it sorted but it wouldn’t have happened if I hadn’t persisted. I had to return the software to America and then 3 months later I noticed a credit on my credit card.

FTM 16 mostly works on it, although I can’t print reports, create gedcom files and the newer names I’m adding (over 92,000) don’t always show up in the list. But if I find a family member that still shows up in the list, I can trace down to the new individuals. Wasn’t about to ruin my working database by installing the 2011 software on my PC. Don’t care about TreeSync. My Ancestry tree has less than 3000 names.

When it works, a very useful program. I primarily use it to sync to my online tree and download the associated media for the records associated with relatives.

This took a little digging, for those of us who may not have signed up for the mailing list (I thought I had) “Emails were sent out to all those who both a) who had registered a copy of FTM 2014 or Mac 3 with Ancestry before March 1, 2016 or a copy of FTM 2014.1 or Mac 3.1 with MacKiev by November 29, 2016 and b) had signed up for the Family Tree Maker mailing list at by November 29, 2016. An ancestry customer service representative told me on the phone today to buy the Mac FTM software download. After I made my purchase, I could not register it.

There is clearly a market there. I am incredibly disappointed with Reunion. I started emailing them over three years ago. Their official comment is no comment, but “they are always looking to update their software”. I still hope that Ancestry will get their act together and/or the folks at Roots Magic will come out with something for Mac. Syncing was no problem before upgrading FTM for Mac 2. Since then, sync errors occur.

Later FamilySync runs also fail to upload all of the remaining media items still missing from the Ancestry tree, and the missing items that FamilySync does upload are usually not attached to any individual in the Ancestry tree. MacKiev staff suggested that my slow Internet connection, DSL with a maximum upload speed of 0.896 megabits per second, might be contributing to the problem. I verified that that is true by successfully uploading an FTM 2017 tree with many large media items from my laptop PC through a faster Internet connection (7.5 to 8 megabits per second upload) at my local library. My slow connection is not the whole problem, because I am able to upload through that connection all the same large media items from a tree made in RootsMagic 7.5 to a new Ancestry tree. I still prefer FTM 2017 over its competitor RootsMagic 7.5 and hope that MacKiev eventually gets upload of trees with large media items working normally over slow Internet connections. Meanwhile, this problem actually affects me very little, because I normally make all changes in the on-line versions of my trees at Ancestry and sync them to the FTM 2017 versions. I’m interested in the ability to upload an FTM 2017 tree to a new Ancestry tree mainly to cover the possible loss of an existing Ancestry tree, which has never happened in the 10 years I’ve been using Ancestry.

Funny that this article was published. I am a Mac user, and said I would never go back to a PC. When FTM 2012 was released for the PC, I weighed the options of getting an inexpensive PC laptop or purchasing the new release of FTM for Mac. As much as it pained me, I actually went and purchased an inexpensive ACER laptop. Boy, how I hate it. But, I really only use it for FTM 2012, so I deal with it.
