Dec 04, 2012  Question: Q: word 2011 for mac wont open on pc. You have to change it in compatibility preference dialog box. Do not just do the save command, it won't work. Hope this help. Dec 4, 2012 12:30 AM Reply Helpful. Thread reply. I checked the old laptop (where it was working) and the print dialog boxes appear to be consistent across machines, but different across applications. In Safari I do get something closer to what you have, in Firefox (and other apps) it's what I showed.

I just purchased a new iMac with iWork. When I open a Word doc. (via Office for Mac-carryover from my old iMac) it opens but will not print. To print it, I have to convert it to Pages, but in the conversion some fonts are incorrectly substituted and create text errors. I would prefer to leave the Word document as is, but cannot understand why it will not print.

Hi, I have had something similar happen, think its related to Adobe PDF 8.0 as I did not have the problems before. The preview pane in word seemed to crop the edges of the document - which makes sense if your printing to a real printer but a PDF should have no such limitations. I managed to resolve it by creating a new Paper Size as follows: From the print dialog box click 'Page Setup' Set 'Format For' to 'Any printer' (as this then allows you to select a custom paper size.) Click 'Paper Size' and select 'Manage Custom Sizes' Click the '+' to add a new paper size and enter the page dimensions. Set the 'Non-Printable Area' to 'User Defined' and set all measurements to 0 Click 'ok' and make sure the new paper size is selected. When you return to Words print dialog box the preview pane should now show the whole page without cropping anything. Hope this helps! The Save/Close option should now be within view. Since you're in Full Screen, you can also readjust the pop-up window vertically instead of just horizontally. After doing this, you should now be able to exit Full Screen and still be able to see the Save/Cancel options when choosing the 'Save As' command. Hope it works for you.

The problem is when I recieve files with the wrong extension, or mispell an extension when saving from Photoshop, or have lots of older files without any extension at all. I even found another new joy, if the file is named something like 'File1.3' with no extension, if you try to change the '.3' to '.4' or something, it gives you the warning again because it thinks the '.3' is actually the file extension. Do you mean that you get, say.jpg's that are called.docs?

Zippityz wrote: I've updated the drivers, but when I try and print two sided, the box under 'Layout' on the Print screen is grayed out. Is this because OS X doesn't recognize manual duplex as true duplex printing? The Layout section shows information based on the PPD for the respective printer. If the printer supports duplex printing, then the option will be enabled in Layout. So for your printer not having a duplex unit and thus no support for automatic duplex printing, then that explains why the setting is disabled.

However, this is becoming rather irritating to do every time I wish to save a file. There's no way to horizontally shrink the Save As page. Any suggestions? I've had the same problem for awhile and this is how I was able to rectify the situation. At the current moment of frustration, in order to get out of the 'Save As' window when the Cancel button is not visible, just hit 'esc' To prevent future frustrations - After hitting 'esc,' Click 'View' then 'Enter Full Screen' - From here, select 'Save As' from the File drop down menu. The Save/Close option should now be within view.

Your saved me!! If you don't mind PAHU could you tell me where you found that? I'm like the help desk for dozens of people and had they came to me for help on this issue I would have failed them. It's aggravating - I currently found your question because I'm looking for a way to make this the default option when I create new printers on a new laptop using lpadmin (so far I haven't found the right -o option). Anyway, hope this helps. Albeit belated for the originator of this question, for those still experiencing the 'auto' 2-sided printing default, rather than posting detailed instructions here, following is a very useful link on how to override this somewhat annoying (for a busy office) default, from Apple user 'PAHU.' FYI, the 2-sided default is a feature of the Apple OS printer interface. Follow all the directions, steps to the following link. If you cannot get the printer to 1-sided default, you have not followed all the steps properly.

Here is the Layout menu on my system. You mention having an old MacBook with 10.9. Is the print dialog view the same as I have shown or is the Orientation located under Layout? Thanks for the image. I would say that the settings you see in Layout are correct for OS X 10.9.x.

HI, If the printer icon is still in the Dock, click that icon, then click: Quit. If that doesnt work, open Activity Monitor (Applications/Utilities). Select My Processes from the pop up menu on the right. Search for your printer under Process Name, then click the red Quit Process button. If that doesn't help, go to. ~/Library/Preferences and locate the preference file associated with your printer, it will read something like this.

This did the trick for me 🙂. As we can see this issue has been going on a long time and has been summarily ignored by those who are updating and upgrading all the time.

Layout Direction is there, as are other options, but not that one. And now things only print in Landscape; I can't change print jobs to Portrait.

So you will need to print on one side first and then reload those printed pages back into the Brother to print on the reverse side. The setting you want to use with the driver is Paper Handling and here you can select to print the odd or even pages first. Then after they have printed and you put then back in the printer, you can then select the opposite setting to the one used previously (i.e. Even if you selected odd). You may want to try this first time with a document consisting of just two pages, so that you know which way you need to load the printed page. Hi, just tried it out and it works for me (I'm using New Macbook 2015 with El Capitan and Office 365), you may try: Go to System Preferences -> Printers and Scanners -> Choose your Printer -> Settings -> Options -> Tick the Duplexer To print on PDF: File -> Print -> under Orientation change the 'Preview' to Layout -> Two Sided button will appear then change to Long Edge-Binding then Print To print on Word: File -> Print -> Change 'copies and pages' to Layout -> Two Sided button will appear then change to Long Edge-Binding then Print Good Luck! I still have to set my windows manually when working with Adobe CC programs on my Thunderbolt monitor, but once it is set up, it seems to work much better than before. I remain frustrated that Apple has produced such poor support for external monitor set-up's with their MacBook Pro laptop computers 😕. I can t seem to fix the issue with a simple monitor shift. When clicking on palettes the drop down menu at best appears a couple of inches from the mouse cursor, at worst is on the other screen on the other side. So I have just reverted to using a single screen. Im never the first to update my system but because of the automatic update feature I am stuck with this awful update until apple decide to fix it. Which seem s like it could be a while.

*'Word cannnot print due to a problem with a current printer. Make sure you have a printer selected in Print Center.

My husband has an Intel Mac Mini that has issues. He can't open the print dialog box from any application--Mail, Firefox, Quickbooks, Word, etc. He can't print anything at all because the dialog box won't open when selecting and or clicking the print icon if there is one in that application. I deleted the printers and reinstalled the drivers.nothing. I upgraded from OS 10.7 to 10.8.again nothing.

Go to: You may need to run a terminal command to enable the CUPS interface, which is annoying in itself: sudo cupsctl WebInterface=yes Once you're in, go find your printer, and Set Default Options, and change Duplexing to off. Then it'll 'stick', otherwise the OSX UI interface will always default back to Duplex printing.

You could probably do it with Automator, but are you sure that the extensions are not hidden? Most apps will add the proper extension even if they don't display it. To check, select one or a group of files and Show the Inspector (Option-Cmd-I) There is a check box for Hide Extension. If this is not selected and there really is no extension then using Automator: Get Selected Finder Items>Rename Finder Items (add text) Show Action when Run. Save that as a PlugIn for Finder To run it, select the files you need to change, Ctrl-Click, and select the Plugin that you just saved in Automator (nested under Automator). I have the Finder set to show all extensions. The files are not generic, it knows what kind of files they are and what program to open them with.

I am running 10.4.10 and Office 11.3.7 I have just reinstalled the office suite and upgraded it. In all of the office applications, when I try to print, it is unable to create a quick preview in the print dialog box and I am unable to create pdf's or anything else. In word, the exact error message is Microsoft Word Error Message: 'Word cannnot print due to a problem with a current printer. Make sure you have a printer selected in Print Center.

I tried again, and chose 'Color Matching' from the popup menu. The Profile popup is set to 'Automatic' and there is only one other option in that menu: 'Other Profiles.' (Choosing any of those Color Sync profiles doesn't work either). I looked for the 'Print in Gray Scale' everywhere, but it isn't there. I also tried saving my doc in pdf, and printing from Preview: same problem, but at least I know that the problem is not in the Pages app itself.

Good luck, if you figure it out please reply here. This happens to our 8570DN's as well. The fix is to use the CUPS interface to set the default options and turn off Duplexing.

Hi - thank you. I know that I was in the Mac/Windows forum.. I couldn't find another forum that fit!:0) Mac users are so much more helpful - honestly - than PC users, and that's why I started here. Anyway, thanks for the link. I went to the URL you suggested.

This time the printer dialogue had all the HP options. So with renewed vigour I went back to my internal boot drive and once again un-installed the HP software. Photo editor for mac apple store. The only thing extra I think I did this time was I also removed 'InstalledPrinters.plist' from the system Library. Then I installed 'HP Installer PSC7200 series v9.7.1' and re-added the HP C7280 Printer And its fixed!

My tax software is where I first noticed it (IRS forms get truncated when you print them landscape, sigh) but you may have pointed me in the right direction. Confirmation later, but even so thanks for now! Confirmed, problem is solved. To review: originally my relatively new Macbook was printing everything in landscape mode.
